Coming Soon: Tumble & Blue

Some stories have to be discovered over and over again as you write. More than two years ago, I had the idea for a book about a kid named Blue who’d been left in a strange old house filled with madcap, ill-fated relatives. Blue’s story felt important, but things weren’t quite gelling for me. Then, Tumble walked into Blue’s life. She was a bright spark from the very first line. She had big dreams. She wanted to be a hero. She wanted to save the world, starting with that kid Blue who seemed to need a friend. And she wasn’t willing to sit on the sidelines. So I scrapped everything...

Updates

It’s been almost a year since I last posted, and what a year it’s been! The Circus Mirandus paperback is out, and it spent some dizzy and thrilling weeks on the NYT Bestseller list. There was a lot of happy dancing over here. Being a published author is a dream come true for me. And knowing there are readers out there for my books–it’s magic. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’ve seen a lot of foreign editions published, too. They are lovely in every way, and each one has its own specialness, whether it’s new interiors or chapter illustrations or...

All the Good News

Circus Mirandus has had a fantastic couple of months, and I am very tardy as far as sharing news on this blog goes. So here are a few of the wonderful things that have been happening lately:   The Audiobook The narrator for the Circus Mirandus audiobook is Bronson Pinchot, who is incredibly cool! And I love it, love it, love it. You can hear an excerpt of his to-die-for narration here.   The Stars The reviews from School Library Journal and Kirkus are in, and they are both *STARRED*! Not only that, but they are really beautiful, insightful reviews. The Kirkus review can be read online...

Special Mailing

Look what came in the mail for me yesterday! This is the special mailing for Circus Mirandus. Over the past week, I’ve seen a few people opening theirs on Twitter, and I’ve gotten more and more excited about it. And now I’ve got my very own magical package to admire! And it is definitely worthy of admiration. Someone–I suspect everyone actually–at Dial/Penguin is a genius. My favorite part is the note from my editor, but I am also a huge fan of the art by Diana Sudyka and the way the “curtains” open to reveal the ARC itself. And I’m pretty...

I’ve Been Anglicized!

I’ve Been Anglicized!

I’ve been Anglicized! And though that might sound dangerous, it’s actually a very good thing. Having your first book published is filled with so many unexpected, cool moments, and this was definitely one of them. Last week, I received an e-mail from my lovely UK publisher, Chicken House, with a spreadsheet that included all the words that will be changed for the UK edition of Circus Mirandus. (How scrumptious is that cover by the way?) Some of the changes were expected. “Asphalt” became “tarmac,” for example, and Micah will be wearing “pyjamas”...
